Professor Tomasz Gackowski is an established media & communication scholar, historian and economist, specializing in social communication and media studies. He holds the position of professor at the University of Warsaw, specifically in the Department of Social Communication and Public Relations at the Faculty of Journalism, Information and Book Studies. He also heads the Laboratory of Media Studies at the university. He was also Deputy Director for Research and International Cooperation at the Institute of Journalism at Warsaw University (2012-2016) and vicechair of Mediatization section of ECREA (2022-2024).
Gackowski’s academic focus is wide-ranging, covering areas such as media & communication research methodologies, political communication, discourse analysis and biometric research, including eye-tracking, face-tracking and GSR/EDA. His research often explores the interactions between politicians and media, and he has contributed significantly to the understanding of political narratives and media influence. In recent years his empiric research were devoted to disruptive technologies like games, virtual and augmented reality and artificial intelligence. He has published numerous books and articles in well-established journals, including works on media manipulation and misinformation, stock exchange communication, and the semiotics of media messaging.
Throughout his career, Professor Gackowski has been involved in many high-profile research projects, including collaborations on grants from the European Research Council (ERC). He has also coordinated studies on the impact of media bias and misinformation, contributing to the growing field of media effects on public opinion, both in Poland and internationally.
He is also actively engaged in the academic community, having organized several national and international conferences and workshops (Recently – ICA Regional Conference – Human Tech Transition. Crises in Mediatized Politics, Society & Economy, 13-15 March 2024, Warsaw (Poland). His contributions have earned him multiple awards and scholarships. Four-time scholar of Ministry of Science and Higher Education (2006–2010) and also a winner in prestigious Program Start 2012 organized by the Foundation for Polish Science. Laureate of prestigious scholarship for remarkable young academics of Polish Ministry of Higher Education and Science (2015 – 2018).
